As some of you know I am planning a 14th c. clothing workshop.
The goal is to make civilian clothing for 4-5 LMS members, more in future but this is a trial workshop to nut things out.
The workshop I plan is to make the following:
Braies -linen (approx 80cm)
Under tunic -linen (approx 2-2.5m)
Tunic -wool (approx 2-2.5m)
Hose (footless) -wool (approx 1.5m)
Hood -wool (approx 60cm)

My aim is to make standard items sized to the individual, to clothe those who don't have these items and to replace hidious synthetic (DEAN!!!!!)and cotton items.

I am planning this in about a month to 5 weeks time.
At this stage it will be held at my house (in bloody werribee), but I am open to trying to find a location on the east of Melbourne. The only good thing about my house is there is plenty of room and all the gear we need is here or very close.

At the moment Emmajayne and I are looking at sourcing white linen, so far we have found it at $10 per meter. If anyone can get it cheaper please let me know, otherwise I will buy up a heap to cover what we need and more.

As for wools I recommend highly Op shop blankets, NOT synthetic. The victoria market sells $10 a meter wool - it is not bad but some colours are made of thin wool. Cheap wool blankets are the best especially with a tabby weave, these are best bought in either the colour you want or a light colour that is easily dyed. I will not be producing anything from synthetic, unless it is a 20% synthetic 80% wool - that is the most synthetic included to make it worth spending the time on. Test the wool by cutting off a small piece and burning it, if it crackles and burns and ends up as hard plastic it's synthetic, if it smolders it's wool.

Meters of wool required will vary not only on size of person but on the items you are making and how the pieces are arranged and cut out, ie. if hose are cut on approx. 45 degrees to give them stretch a hood is easily cut from the material on either side.

We need more pairs of good scissors, we have one good pair here, we will need at least one more good pair so I am hoping someone attending will have a good set.

We need one more sewing machine and someone good at operating it, these will be basic patterns not complex designs.
Sewing machine work is not the most time consuming, marking out and cuting out is, and of course hand finishing is a long process as well.
I would prefer to hand finish visible seems, even if that means leaving some garments with me while EJ and I finish them, trust me it makes a big difference to the finish.

Some of the places in the workshop are already taken, please state your interest. If you don't get in this time there will be more, and it's never too early to start collecting material.

Please list what items you need from the list above, if you already have braies for gods sake list that you need them as you shouldn't live out of one pair...this is the medieval times not the la la dark ages.

This the style I am looking at doing, with slightly longer braies.

when you've got a date let us know...can bring sewing machine, trestle table & Gina.

Gina also suggests going parti-coloured if you can't find enough matching blankets at the op-shop.

Best regards

Robert

This is a really good idea and i would encourage any LMS member in need of soft kit ( most of us ) to be involved.

This is a fantastic idea James and EJ have come up with and I personally support it 100%. I'll be there with bells on and I'll bring a sewing machine and Raechal with me too. This is a chance to learn how to mass produce some surcoats, put our heraldry on em and get some Knights out there!

$10 a metre for wool is bulls--t but James wasn't kidding when he said you can pick up some good stuff for bugger all. I went to 'Savers' and picked up 2 blankets of 100% wool. Both blankets were about 2 - 2.5 metres long and $3.99 each $8 for about 5 metres? Doesn't get cheaper than that people so get out there and raid those Op shops!

Looking forward to this! Smile

Hello all, the first clothing workshop will be on the 26th of July, I know this is short notice but to have EJ and Gina both free to sew we had to go for this date or it would be a long time until we could run it.

So far I have down;
Stoops,
Dean,
Damo,
Paul.

We have room for one more person.

EJ and I will be providing the white linen.
We will also have avialable some wool, we are happy to pick up some wool at about $10 meter, PM if you need wool and I can organise something.

Like I said this is the first workshop of what I hope will be many.
I know my house is in a Poo location being far away so the next will be closer.

The plan is to get everyone at my house early so we have a full day to get as much done as possible.
BYO grog and food, if we can all bring a bit of food we can throw it together.

James.

James.

S--t man Raechal has this damn nursing training thing to go to all day saturday that her work has already paid for her to go and do.
She was the one that was gonna make all my stuff! We tried making a hood (and by we i mean her) the other night but it doesn't fit me at all.
So yeah, she's the one who really needs this workshop hahaha Laughing
This can't possibly be on the Sunday can it?

Stoops the LMS archer day is on the sunday yer?
The plan was sewing on saturday, combat and archery on sunday, EJ could finish some hand sewing on the sunday too while watching us fight, we will have 2 girls at my house sewing on saturday so we shouldn't need Racheal and that way she can do her thing and you can come to my house. If you can get a lift to my house we will sort you out.

Don't worry about me mate I'M still gonna come for sure! Got a s--tload of material i'll be bringing with me too.
Need ya to burn me that CD of patterns you got too mate.

I'm in need of a good surcoat so I can get my crest on it for future deeds and I've got this great heavy canvas material for it (not drill).

See ya there!

Stoops,
Dean,
Paul,
Damo.

I have Stoops, dean and Damo confirmed, Paul are you in??
Who out of you guys needs wool??
I am buying up all the linen I can get so you don't have to worry about that.
I know what damo needs.
Can you guys state which items from the list what items you would like to make, and if you need wool, as I am going to the Vic market tomorrow to buy up wool.
